Green Gateway in Morocco
Ifrane National Park, mountain region in Morocco
Copenhagen Zoo works with partners in Morocco to strengthen young people’s knowledge of nature and biodiversity. Through the Green Gateway project, educators are trained to inspire and engage young people in nature conservation and green career opportunities.
At the same time, the project supports the work of Moroccan authorities in Ifrane National Park, helping to conserve endangered species in the area and bring back the northern bald ibis, which disappeared from the area in the 1980s.
The aim is to build a greater understanding of the area’s unique natural environment and give young people more opportunities to engage in nature conservation and contribute to protecting Morocco’s biodiversity.
How the project started
Green Gateway was launched in 2023 as part of the Danish-Arab Partnership Programme. The aim was to establish a partnership between Copenhagen Zoo, Moroccan authorities and a range of local and international partners.
The project was created to engage more young people in nature conservation while creating new employment opportunities in green sectors.
As part of the project, education and training programmes are being developed to equip participants with the skills and tools to communicate knowledge about nature and biodiversity.
What we are working on right now

The future of the project
The ambition is to ensure the long-term sustainability of the work in Ifrane National Park. In the future, the project aims to equip more young people with the skills to work with nature, the environment and sustainable development.
At the same time, the goal is to strengthen local nature management and build greater international support for biodiversity conservation in Morocco. Through education and collaboration, more people can play an active role in tackling the biodiversity crisis.
